Silversmithing Heritage:
Valenza, Arezzo, and Vicenza

Three districts account for the majority of Italy's fine jewellery output. Each has a distinct production model, regulatory framework, and workforce tradition dating back more than two centuries.

Three Manufacturing Hubs

Valenza, Arezzo, and Vicenza each represent a separate chapter in Italy's goldsmith industry — differing in scale, specialisation, and international reach.

Lost-Wax Casting, Stone Setting, and Beyond

Valenza's production remains anchored in bench skills: lost-wax casting converts wax prototypes into metal forms, followed by hand-finishing, stone setting under microscope, and multi-stage polishing. Titanium and alternative alloys are entering the workflow, but the core artisan sequence has changed little since the mid-twentieth century.

Italy's Precious Metals Marking Framework

Italian hallmarking is voluntary rather than mandatory, but manufacturers applying for export to Vienna Convention member states use the Common Control Mark (CCM). Arezzo manufacturers register a district code — "1 AR" — as their identification mark. Italy processes roughly 400 tonnes of gold annually for jewellery manufacturing.

Vicenzaoro: Where the Supply Chain Meets

Nine specialised communities — branded jewellery, goldsmith production, precious stones, gems and diamonds, components, packaging, and machinery for precious metals — converge at Vicenzaoro twice yearly. The fair's educational arm runs seminars, round tables, and the Professioni d'Oro programme, which introduces school-age students to goldsmith career paths.
